Cyprus government unveils new social support initiatives for persons with disabilities
Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Tina Pavlou recently announced a strategic shift in the Cypriot government's policy regarding the support of persons with disabilities. During a charity dinner on Monday and a subsequent consultation conference in Nicosia on Wednesday, the Deputy Minister emphasized the transition from a passive welfare approach toward active empowerment. The government aims to foster economic and professional independence by promoting social entrepreneurship, which includes a grant scheme specifically designed for individuals with disabilities to establish their own businesses.
The reform focuses on personalized support services, such as skill training, workplace assistance, mobility support, and psychosocial care. Officials noted that these policies are being developed in direct consultation with the disability community to ensure individual needs are prioritized. The Ministry is also highlighting the long-term contribution of organizations like the Saint Luke the Physician Community, which has been providing 24-hour care programs since 2008. These measures reflect a broader commitment to long-term integration, autonomy, and social participation for people with disabilities at every stage of their lives.
