Cyprus Electricity Authority to conduct drone inspections of power grids
The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has announced a series of scheduled drone flights to inspect its electricity distribution network and associated equipment. The operations are set to take place between October 8 and October 21, 2026, and are designed to identify potential faults, such as damaged lines, insulators, and poles, as well as vegetation growth near wires that could trigger power outages.
The initial phase of the operation is scheduled for October 8, 2026, between 09:00 and 11:00, covering the areas of Omonoia and Chalkoutsa. From October 8 through October 21, 2026, inspections will extend to the Ypsonas Industrial Area, Alassa, Monagri, Doros, Trimiklini, Saitas, Kato Amiantos, Platania, Kakopetria, Galata, Sina Oros, and Temvria. The EAC has emphasized that these flights will be short-term and limited strictly to areas requiring maintenance or diagnostic review.
Technologically, the use of drones allows the EAC to capture data for creating three-dimensional digital models, which improves infrastructure planning and safety. The authority states that all operations will be conducted in full compliance with current regulatory and legislative frameworks governing unmanned aerial systems (UAS), serving exclusively operational and technical purposes.
