Diplomatic tension escalates over British consulate closure in East Jerusalem
The United Kingdom faces the imminent closure of its consulate in East Jerusalem, an institution with nearly 200 years of history, following an Israeli order issued on September 8. The directive requires the facility to shut down by Thursday as retaliation for Britain’s planned trade sanctions against Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Overnight, workers were observed removing signage from the building, although the British flag remained flying as of Wednesday.
Approximately 30 British diplomats and their families face displacement if the closure proceeds. In response to the potential loss of the consulate, four anonymous sources suggest that Britain is likely to retaliate by expelling an equivalent number of Israeli diplomats from the Israeli embassy in the United Kingdom. While Britain’s national security adviser conducted emergency talks in Israel last week, the effort appears to have failed as Israel maintains that the closure is non-negotiable. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has previously accused London of attempting to interfere in Israeli domestic elections through its sanctions policy. The situation remains fluid as both nations brace for the final deadline.
