Building collapse in Maltepe, Istanbul results in casualties
A seven-story residential building partially collapsed in the Cevizli neighborhood of Istanbul's Maltepe district on the morning of October 8, 2026. The incident occurred around 05:40 local time on Dogu Street, when the three lower levels of the 1987-built structure crumbled. The building housed 12 apartments and was registered to 33 residents. Emergency teams, including AFAD, UMKE, police, and firefighters, launched a search and rescue operation to locate trapped individuals while evacuating residents from the upper floors and adjacent buildings deemed at risk.
According to official reports from the Istanbul Governor, Davut Gul, one person was confirmed dead and ten others were rescued, including three children. Four of the survivors required hospitalization, though none are reported to be in life-threatening condition. Rescue efforts continue for three individuals believed to still be trapped under the debris. Authorities have cordoned off the area and initiated both judicial and administrative investigations to determine the cause of the structural failure. Displaced residents are being housed in hotels arranged by the disaster management agency.
