Five dead after partial building collapse in Istanbul
On the morning of October 8, 2026, at approximately 05:40 local time, the lower three floors of a seven-story residential building partially collapsed in the Cevizli neighborhood of the Maltepe district in Istanbul. Built in 1987, the structure housed 12 apartments and was home to 33 registered residents. Emergency services, including AFAD, UMKE, police, and fire brigades, were immediately deployed to the site to conduct search and rescue operations, which continued until they concluded on the morning of October 9.
The incident resulted in five deaths, including a five-year-old child. Ten individuals were rescued from the rubble, with six remaining hospitalized, one in serious condition. To ensure safety, authorities evacuated 55 residents from three adjacent buildings and provided them with alternative accommodation. Following the collapse, a judicial and administrative investigation was initiated into the causes, leading to the detention of the building's architect and the site manager. Samples of the building's concrete have been collected for analysis as part of the ongoing probe.
