Cyprus hosts the 25th European Day for Organ, Tissue and Cell Donation
Cyprus is hosting the 25th European Day for Organ, Tissue and Cell Donation on October 9, 2026. The official opening ceremony will take place at the Medieval Castle Square in the harbour of Paphos. The event is organized by the Cypriot Ministry of Health and the Transplant Council, with support from the Karaiskakio Foundation and in cooperation with the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and HealthCare of the Council of Europe.
The event, themed "Sharing lives," is dedicated to honoring organ donors, their families, and the health professionals facilitating the process. Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides released a recorded message emphasizing that the state has a fundamental responsibility to build public trust in the transplant system and to foster a culture of empathy and solidarity. He highlighted that for many patients, transplants represent the only opportunity to restore their quality of life and return to their families.
Hosting this event serves as a platform to provide accurate information to the public, aiming to address existing fears and prejudices regarding donation. The government stressed that both living and deceased donations are vital, selfless acts that connect individuals and offer hope to those on transplant waiting lists.
