Debate over historical reports of Soviet funding for AKEL
Reports regarding Soviet archives that claim the AKEL party in Cyprus received funding and weapons from the USSR and the KGB have recently resurfaced, sparking a political confrontation. Charis Polykarpou, the press spokesperson for AKEL, dismissed the renewed attention to these documents during a television appearance on October 7, 2026. He argued that these allegations have been discussed publicly since 2000 and questioned the suspicious timing of their current reappearance in the media, suggesting it is not coincidental.
In response, the Democratic Rally (DISY) party issued a formal statement on October 8, 2026, titled 'AKEL and the KGB - Historical evidence demands answers, not evasions.' DISY criticized AKEL for focusing on the timing of the reports rather than addressing the substance of the claims. The party is formally demanding that AKEL confirm whether the documents are authentic, whether the alleged funds were received, and whether the party maintained or still maintains any mechanisms for citizen surveillance. The political dispute remains active as the historical records continue to provoke questions regarding the party’s past relations with Soviet mechanisms.
