Authorities address safety and illegal activities at Filanda complex in Larnaca
Authorities in Larnaca held an emergency meeting on October 8, 2026, to address the critical situation at the Filanda apartment complex, which consists of five buildings and 150 units. The complex has been declared dangerous by the Larnaca District Self-Government Organization (EOA), following numerous reports of illicit activities, including electricity and water theft, illegal subletting of apartments, and threats directed at the building's management committee. Residents include owners, families with children, and individuals under the supervision of Social Welfare Services.
The meeting, chaired by Larnaca Police Director Ioannis Kapnoulas, included representatives from the Ministry of Migration, Social Welfare Services, the Electricity Authority, health departments, and local municipal authorities. Recent complaints indicate that apartment owners are being denied access to their properties by illegal occupants who have allegedly entered into unauthorized agreements. Police are currently investigating these reports alongside cases of criminal intimidation.
Historically, the complex has been described as a health hazard, with a fatal incident involving a foreign national occurring on-site in May. Authorities plan to coordinate a joint operation to conduct comprehensive inspections of the residents and the building's structural safety to restore order and address the ongoing legal violations.
