Parliamentary committee examines understaffing and employment issues at Cyprus Post
The Parliamentary Committee on Transport in Cyprus held a session on October 8, 2026, to address chronic understaffing and irregular employment practices at the Cyprus Post, following an initiative by DIKO MP Panikos Leonidou. The discussion focused on labor uncertainty, particularly in Limassol, and the disparate employment categories currently in use, which include permanent civil service distributors, indefinite-term staff, and hourly-paid workers.
During the session, the Ministry of Finance reported that there are 96 positions for civil service distributors, with 81 currently filled, alongside 165 indefinite-term distributors and 38 hourly-paid workers. Marinos Kortas of the Postal Services Department noted that the volume of traditional mail has declined by 50% since 2015. Consequently, the department is implementing a redistribution plan based on European standards. The session highlighted significant friction between trade unions and the Director of the Cyprus Post, with critics accusing management of creating disorder through inconsistent hiring policies. The committee aims to resolve how these issues impact both the workforce's livelihood and the quality of service provided to citizens, with further monitoring of the department's operational restructuring expected.
