Parliamentary review of employment conditions at Cyprus Postal Services
The Cyprus Parliamentary Committee on Transport met on October 8, 2026, to address chronic understaffing and precarious employment conditions within the Cyprus Postal Services. Initiated by DIKO parliamentary representative Panikos Leonidou, the discussion highlighted significant operational problems, particularly in Limassol, resulting from staff departures and delays in filling vacancies. Union representatives criticized the Director of the Postal Services for inconsistent management decisions and complex employment structures, which currently involve 81 civil service distributors, 165 indefinite-term employees, and 38 hourly workers.
Department representatives noted that traditional mail volume has declined by 50% since 2015, prompting plans for a route re-evaluation based on European standards. However, Sotiris Ioannou, President of the Committee and ELAM parliamentary representative, warned that further staff reductions could prove detrimental. While mail volume has dropped, population growth and urban expansion have increased the number of delivery routes, forcing current staff to cover larger areas. The committee is set to revisit these issues in early November to receive further clarifications from the relevant authorities regarding labor safety and organizational reforms.
