Anne Carson awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature
The Swedish Academy announced in Stockholm on October 8, 2026, that the Canadian poet, translator, and classicist Anne Carson has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The 76-year-old author was recognized for her bold, inventive works that engage in a playful dialogue with classical traditions while establishing new contemporary literary forms. The award includes a cash prize of 12 million Swedish kronor.
Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson has had an extensive academic career, teaching ancient Greek and classics at institutions including Princeton, McGill, and Berkeley. Her bibliography, which centers on the linguistic roots of meaning, includes notable works such as 'Autobiography of Red', 'The Beauty of the Husband', 'Decreation', and 'Nox'. The Academy praised her ability to bridge the gap between a philologist's focus and a poet's quest for innovation. Last year, the prize was awarded to Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai.
The formal award ceremony is scheduled to take place on December 10 in Stockholm. The selection followed intense public speculation, which had also highlighted other contenders such as Can Xue, Haruki Murakami, Gerald Murnane, and Thomas Pynchon.
