Cyprus Minister proposes 'panic button' for delivery workers following attacks
On October 8, 2026, Minister of Justice and Public Order Costas Fytiris proposed the implementation of a 'red button' system for delivery platform companies in Cyprus. The measure is designed to alert police immediately in the event of an attack on delivery personnel. Following a meeting with platform representatives, the Minister noted that the increase in incidents, which he characterizes primarily as robbery rather than racially motivated, necessitates improved security measures, as it is impossible for police to provide constant coverage in every location.
The proposed system would allow couriers to trigger an alert, enabling law enforcement to respond rapidly. Implementation depends on the agreement of the delivery companies and will require a period of time to develop. The Minister emphasized that the success of this measure relies on timely communication from the victims to the police. This initiative follows a series of recent attacks against delivery workers, prompting government intervention to enhance safety for independent contractors who often carry significant amounts of cash.
