Annita Demetriou withdraws from 2028 Disy presidential race
On October 8, 2026, the leader of the Cypriot political party Disy, Annita Demetriou, announced her withdrawal from the race for the party's 2028 presidential nomination. The decision, intended to preserve party unity, leaves former party leader Averof Neophytou and former health minister George Pamboridis as the remaining candidates for the internal election scheduled for November 28.
Following the announcement, Averof Neophytou praised the decision as wise and responsible, emphasizing the need for a collective approach. Meanwhile, George Pamboridis expressed his respect for Demetriou's choice, despite ongoing tensions within the party. The European People’s Party has stated it will support whoever wins the Disy internal vote.
Despite the withdrawal, the party faces significant internal uncertainty. Reports indicate that former deputy leader Haris Georgiades is under pressure to intervene, while allegations regarding external influence on the decision-making process have been denied by founding member Frixos Koulermos. The party remains divided, with concerns that the upcoming internal contest may trigger a bitter campaign rather than restore complete stability.
