US to livestream firing squad execution of 2009 Fort Hood gunman
The United States Department of War has announced plans to livestream the upcoming firing squad execution of Nidal Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist responsible for the 2009 mass shooting at the Fort Hood military base in Texas. The incident, which occurred on November 5, 2009, resulted in 13 deaths and over 30 injuries. This planned broadcast marks an unprecedented event in American history, as the U.S. has never before televised or livestreamed a legal execution.
The execution is scheduled to take place on December 3 at the Fort Hood base. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the public nature of the event, following President Donald Trump’s approval of the death sentence on October 2. Hasan, who was sentenced to death by a military jury in 2013, will become the first person to be executed by a U.S. military firing squad since 1945. The move to broadcast the procedure arrives amid intense national debate regarding capital punishment in the United States.
