Diko MP discusses potential political alliances for the 2028 presidential elections
In a recent podcast with Cyprus Times, DIKO MP Chrysis Pantelidis outlined the political landscape ahead of the 2028 presidential elections. He expressed a preference for collaboration with DISY, noting that the two parties share more ideological common ground than DIKO does with AKEL. Pantelidis highlighted that 85 to 90 percent of current government legislation would not have passed without DISY's support, reinforcing the idea of a central-right alignment.
Despite this preference, Pantelidis emphasized that a partnership with DISY is not the only path. He described DIKO’s participation in the current administration as successful and suggested that the party's final decision will heavily depend on the intentions of President Nikos Christodoulides regarding a potential re-election bid. Furthermore, he noted that the party’s collective bodies might explore other options, including an independent candidacy by Nikolas Papadopoulos.
It is important to note that these comments were recorded before the recent withdrawal of Annita Demetriou from the internal DISY race. The party remains in a state of evaluation, as the door to cooperation with AKEL is considered largely closed unless they support a center-right candidate, leaving the political process fluid as internal party discussions continue.
