Ionas Nicolaou considers DISY nomination as party turmoil continues
Following the withdrawal of Annita Demetriou from the race for the Democratic Rally (DISY) nomination for the 2028 presidential elections, political uncertainty within the party has intensified. Former Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou has confirmed he received nomination papers and has reportedly collected 500 signatures; however, he stated that these actions were taken prior to Demetriou's withdrawal and that he has not yet made a final decision on whether to launch a formal candidacy.
The political situation at the party headquarters in Pindaros remains volatile. Tensions escalated following a meeting involving party leader Annita Demetriou, Averof Neophytou, and Giorgos Pamborides, where the latter accused publisher Phrixos Koullermos of pressuring him to withdraw. While Demetriou maintains her decision was autonomous, some party factions are now actively searching for a third candidate to contest the nomination alongside Neophytou and Pamborides. Reports indicate that MEP Loucas Fourlas has been approached by party members to consider entering the race, though he has not publicly committed to such a move.
Currently, the party remains in a state of flux with no immediate announcements expected. While Nicolaou has gathered the necessary signatures, sources suggest he is not currently intending to proceed with an official submission. The internal selection process remains ongoing, with observers monitoring how potential new candidacies might impact the existing balance of power within the party.
