Supreme Court upholds damages for 2007 motorcycle accident
On October 8, 2026, the Supreme Court of Cyprus dismissed an appeal filed by a female driver, finalizing a legal battle stemming from a traffic accident that occurred on November 17, 2007, in Makedonitissa, Nicosia. The collision between the driver’s vehicle and a motorcyclist resulted in significant injuries to the latter, specifically involving a rupture of the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, alongside other trauma.
The appellate court, led by judges Stamatiou, Demetriadou-Andreou, and David, affirmed the initial judgment regarding the assessment of damages. The motorcyclist was awarded €35,000 in general damages, an additional €10,000 for a future arthroplasty, and €760.68 for transport and accommodation expenses, all based on a pre-agreed liability split of 80% for the driver and 20% for the motorcyclist. Previous special damages totaling €17,528 were also noted as part of the case.
The ruling concludes a long-standing legal dispute that began shortly after the incident nineteen years ago. By dismissing the appeal, the court has solidified the financial compensation framework for the victim's long-term health complications, effectively bringing the litigation to a close.
