Fatal explosion at Motor Oil refinery in Agioi Theodoroi
On the morning of Friday, October 9, 2026, an explosion occurred at the Motor Oil refinery facility in Agioi Theodoroi, Greece. The incident took place in an outdoor area of the refinery during scheduled preventive maintenance. Two external contractors, aged 43 and 50, were critically injured, and one of them later succumbed to his wounds. The second worker remains hospitalized in critical condition under intubation. Initial transport of the injured was handled by private ambulances belonging to the company, which also deployed its own firefighting equipment; no fire resulted from the blast.
Following the accident, the company activated its safety and emergency protocols, leading to the evacuation of other staff. While reports initially indicated transport to Thriasio Hospital for specialized burn treatment, later updates clarified that one victim remains at Corinth General Hospital. Additionally, a third individual sought medical attention at the Corinth hospital due to minor respiratory issues. Authorities including police forces attended the scene. The refinery has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the maintenance accident, while safety protocols remain under review.
