Industrial accident at Motor Oil refinery in Agioi Theodoroi
On the morning of Friday, October 9, 2026, an explosion occurred at the Motor Oil refinery in Agioi Theodoroi, Greece. The incident took place in an outdoor area of the facility during extensive preventive maintenance work, involving a private external contractor's team. Two workers, initially identified as 43 and 50 years old, were severely injured. A third person later presented to the hospital with mild respiratory issues.
Following the explosion, the injured men were initially transported to the Corinth General Hospital and subsequently transferred to Thriasio Hospital, which operates a specialized burn unit. One of the victims, reported as 43 or 44 years old by different sources, succumbed to his injuries, while the 50-year-old remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Following the fatality, police arrested the 59-year-old contractor in charge of the maintenance crew on orders from a prosecutor. A case file has been opened against him for causing an explosion and dangerous bodily harm. Local authorities are investigating the circumstances, as standard safety and emergency protocols were activated by the company immediately after the incident.
