Artist Hambis Tsangaris disputes government claims on museum maintenance funding
On October 9, 2026, renowned engraver Hambis Tsangaris publicly challenged statements made by the Turkish Cypriot Properties Service and the Cypriot Minister of the Interior regarding the maintenance of his Printmaking School and Museum in Platanisteia. While Tsangaris welcomed the official acknowledgment of his cultural contributions, he categorically refuted claims that the state had provided financial support for repairs to the museum's facilities.
Tsangaris specifically addressed comments made by the Minister of the Interior on a radio broadcast, where the Minister suggested that the government had invested more in the facilities than the artist himself in recent years. Tsangaris rejected this as inaccurate, stating that any public funds mentioned by the authorities were directed toward other work and not the museum or school infrastructure.
He is now calling for an on-site inspection of the premises in Platanisteia to clarify the true state of the buildings and verify the history of maintenance funding. This dispute highlights an ongoing tension between the artist and state authorities regarding the management and preservation of the properties housing his life's work.
