Student injured by falling ceiling plaster at Vasilika Junior High
A 14-year-old student was injured on October 9, 2026, when a large piece of ceiling plaster detached and fell on him during classes at the Vasilika Junior High School in the Municipality of Thermi, Thessaloniki. The incident occurred at approximately 13:30. The student was transported by an EKAB ambulance to the G. Gennimatas hospital to receive medical evaluation at the pediatric surgery clinic.
The Union of Parents and Guardians of the Municipality of Thermi expressed significant concern, releasing photos of the incident and demanding that the municipal authority conduct immediate safety inspections. The Union has insisted that the school should remain closed until the municipality provides written certification confirming the building's structural safety to prevent further accidents.
Stylianos Apostolou, the Deputy Mayor of Education for Thermi, confirmed the incident after arriving at the scene. He stated that the municipality regularly maintains school facilities but noted that this specific failure could not have been anticipated, as there were no visible signs of moisture or damage on the ceiling. The situation remains under review as parents await official guarantees regarding the school's safety before classes resume.
