Cyprus outlines space industry strategy at Athens symposium
On October 8, 2026, Cyprus Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Deputy Minister Nicodemos Damianou addressed the 3rd Space Symposium in Athens to outline the nation's evolving role in the European space sector. Damianou emphasized that space is no longer a peripheral policy area but a fundamental component of modern state infrastructure, driven by increasing private investment and international partnerships.
Cyprus has committed €13.5 million to European Space Agency (ESA) programs for the 2026–2028 period to bolster its domestic space industry and technology businesses. The country has officially adopted a National Space Strategy for 2025–2030, enacted legislation for the licensing and supervision of space activities, and established the Cyprus Space Office to centralize national efforts. These initiatives aim to capitalize on a growing global space economy, which is projected to reach $1.8 trillion by 2035 according to the World Economic Forum and McKinsey.
Future projections also highlight significant growth in satellite navigation and Earth observation, with navigation services revenue expected to rise from €300 billion to €580 billion by 2034. By strengthening its regulatory framework and deepening cooperation with Greece and European partners, Cyprus intends to secure a more competitive position within the international space market.
