Cypriot leaders prepare for talks as negotiators meet
On October 9, 2026, the negotiators for the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, Menelaos Menelaou and Mehmet Dana, met under the auspices of the United Nations Good Offices Mission. This technical meeting was held to coordinate agendas and prepare for the upcoming high-level meeting between Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, scheduled for next Tuesday.
Speaking at the 6th Pan-Cypriot Refugee Gathering in Dasaki Achnas, President Christodoulides emphasized his readiness to resume formal negotiations immediately. He stated that the Greek Cypriot side has provided specific proposals addressing UN methodology, confidence-building measures, and core aspects of the Cyprus issue. Christodoulides reaffirmed that there is no 'Plan B' and that the ultimate goal remains the reunification of the country and the end of the occupation. He intends to deliver this message directly to the Turkish Cypriot leader during their meeting next week.
These developments follow a period of diplomatic efforts to break the stalemate in the Cyprus negotiations. Officials indicate that the current discussions serve to align positions and establish a framework that could lead to a formal resumption of the peace process.
