President Christodoulides pushes for Cyprus peace talks
President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides has reaffirmed his government's readiness to resume negotiations for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue immediately. During the 46th anti-occupation event of the Morphou Municipality in Astromeritis on October 10, 2026, he emphasized that there is no alternative to resolving the conflict. Christodoulides indicated that his administration has submitted new proposals, including a 19-point plan, covering methodology, confidence-building measures, and the core substance of the issue, which were designed to break the long-standing stalemate.
The President is scheduled to meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, to discuss these proposals in detail. He noted that the United Nations has completed a document of convergences which he hopes will serve as a basis for restarting talks from the point where they were interrupted in 2017. While asserting his willingness to make functional concessions, the President clarified that the return of Morphou remains a non-negotiable objective for the Greek Cypriot side. Despite the challenging diplomatic environment and Turkey’s insistence on a two-state solution, the government maintains that a "window of opportunity" exists to transform the Republic into a modern, sovereign state without foreign troops or intervention rights.
