Cyprus launches mental health campaign amid calls for systemic reform
On October 9, 2026, the Cyprus Psychiatric Society launched the nationwide awareness campaign "Let's Talk Openly" to combat social stigma and encourage early intervention for mental health disorders. The initiative, supported by Medochemie and the Cyprus Medical Association, highlights global data indicating that one in seven people suffers from a mental disorder, with over 75% lacking adequate treatment. In Cyprus, statistics reveal that 17.2% of the population faces mental health challenges, while workers report high levels of stress and anxiety.
Simultaneously, marking World Mental Health Day on October 10, nursing unions and the Patient Ombudsman have drawn attention to significant domestic crises, including understaffing and overcrowding at Athalassa Hospital. Marios Charalambidis, the Patient Ombudsman, revealed that the government is currently reviewing two draft bills. The first aims to reform the legal framework regarding involuntary psychiatric hospitalization, while the second focuses on institutionalizing community-based mental health services and specialized support for children and adolescents.
Stakeholders, including the PASYDY nursing branch, emphasize that long-term policy must integrate the experiences of patients and families into decision-making. The proposed reforms seek to move beyond symptom management toward ensuring patient dignity, social reintegration, and a more accessible, modern healthcare system.
