Cyprus launches national mental health campaign to combat stigma
On October 9, 2026, the Cyprus Psychiatric Association officially launched the national awareness campaign "Let's Talk Openly" (As Milisoume Anoikta). Sponsored by Medochemie and supported by the Cyprus Medical Association, the initiative aims to reduce social stigma, promote early diagnosis, and encourage citizens to seek professional mental health support.
During the announcement, experts highlighted that one in seven people worldwide lives with a mental disorder. According to the Cyprus Psychiatric Association, global figures show 470 million people suffer from anxiety, 422 million from depression, and 20 million from schizophrenia. In Cyprus, statistics indicate that 17.2% of the population lives with a mental health condition, slightly above the European Union average. Recent data also suggests that 86% of young Cypriots feel uncertain about their future, while 41% of workers report high stress levels.
This campaign follows recent parliamentary discussions regarding systemic shortcomings in psychiatric care, including staff shortages and legislative gaps. To address these issues, the government is currently processing two bills focused on reforming psychiatric hospitalization, patient rights, and the institutionalization of community-based mental health services. Patient advocate Marios Charalambides has emphasized the urgent need for these legislative updates to strengthen the national mental health framework.
