Protest march against electricity prices scheduled for October 17 in Nicosia
The political party Amesi Dimokratia Kyprou (Direct Democracy of Cyprus), led by Fidias Panagiotou, has announced a nationwide protest march against rising electricity costs. The demonstration is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 17, 2026, in the capital city of Nicosia.
Participants are requested to gather at Eleftheria Square at 16:00, from where they will march to the Presidential Palace, with the main event beginning at 17:00. The organizers argue that in a country with over 300 days of sunshine annually, it is unacceptable for electricity to be treated as a luxury, placing an unsustainable financial burden on households and businesses alike. The movement emphasizes that the issue is non-partisan and affects all citizens regardless of their political affiliation.
To facilitate attendance, the party has organized free bus transportation from Paphos (14:00), Paralimni (14:30), Larnaca (15:00), and Limassol (15:00). Citizens interested in joining the march and utilizing the free transport service are required to register via an online form or contact the organizers by phone. The demonstration serves as a call for immediate and substantial government intervention to address the high cost of power, though no formal court or legislative actions have been announced as a direct follow-up.
