Palestinian president postpones parliamentary and presidential elections until 2027
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has officially issued a decree postponing the parliamentary elections previously scheduled for November 28, 2026. The new date for both parliamentary and presidential elections has been set for September 11, 2027. This decision, announced via the official Wafa news agency, marks a significant delay in the democratic process, as the Palestinian territories have not held general elections in two decades.
Abbas attributed the delay to obstacles caused by Israeli measures in Gaza and East Jerusalem, citing the need for appropriate political, security, and field conditions to ensure free and fair elections. Conversely, reports from Independent Arabia suggest that internal Fatah divisions, the lack of readiness among factions, and concerns regarding potential electoral defeat have also influenced the decision. While the electoral commission had proposed alternatives, such as placing ballot boxes in the suburbs of Jerusalem, the government chose to postpone the process to next year.
The international and domestic reaction remains focused on the uncertainty this delay brings to the Palestinian leadership transition. Observers and election monitoring organizations have expressed concern over the impact of this move on the legitimacy of the political process as the region remains under pressure from both security challenges and economic instability.
