Debate over legality of Melios Zoo follows bear escape incident
An investigation is underway in Ayioi Trimithias, Cyprus, following an incident on the night of October 10, 2026, where a male bear escaped from its enclosure at the Melios Zoo Park. The owner, Menelaos Menelaou, claimed the animal did not leave the property and was quickly secured with police assistance, while officials emphasized that the incident highlights broader issues regarding the facility's regulatory status.
The park, which has been operating since 2000, faces significant legal hurdles. Christodoulos Pipis, Director of Veterinary Services, stated that the zoo has lacked a valid operating license since 2017 due to unapproved urban planning extensions and illegal land use, including the enclosure of state-owned property. Despite multiple court rulings, including a Supreme Court decision from April 2026 rejecting the owner's appeal against closure, the facility remains active. Authorities, led by the Nicosia District Self-Governing Organization (EOA), are currently coordinating a plan to inspect the premises within October to facilitate the enforcement of the court-ordered demolition and the relocation of animals.
While Mr. Menelaou insists the facility operates legally as a farm and rejects accusations of safety failures, the incident has prompted calls for government intervention from the Animal Party and agricultural officials. Future steps include on-site inspections to determine the specific structures subject to demolition and the long-term management of the captive animals.
