Severe weather alert issued for Cyprus as autumn storms approach
Meteorological authorities in Cyprus have issued an orange weather warning due to an incoming barometric low moving from the Ionian Sea. The warning is set to be in effect from 19:00 local time on Wednesday, October 14, until 05:00 on Thursday, October 15, 2026. The weather system is expected to bring heavy rainfall, with intensities estimated between 55 and 70 millimeters per hour, accompanied by strong thunderstorms, hail, and high-velocity wind gusts.
The storm is projected to affect the entire island, with western areas such as Paphos and Limassol expected to bear the initial impact before the system moves across the country. Meteorological officials have warned that conditions could lead to localized flooding, and the Civil Defense has been placed on high alert. The weather pattern marks a distinct meteorological transition into autumn, with temperatures expected to drop as the system passes.
Following the passage of the main storm front, unsettled weather is likely to persist for several days. Residents are advised to monitor official channels for potential updates and warnings. The Department of Water Development has also previously identified 18 specific regions vulnerable to flooding, which remain under observation during this severe weather event.
