AKEL initiates internal procedures for the 2028 presidential elections
The AKEL party has officially commenced internal procedures for the 2028 presidential elections, aiming to finalize its candidate selection by March 2027 through an Extraordinary Pancyprian Conference. Despite rapid developments within the DISY party, which has scheduled its own primary process for late November 2026, AKEL leadership maintains that they will follow their own strategic roadmap and are not pressured by the political timeline of their opponents. The party's internal schedule involves drafting a political framework this October, followed by exploratory contacts with other political entities, including EDEK, ALMA, Volt, and the Greens.
AKEL's criteria for a potential candidate remain focused on resolving the Cyprus issue and uniting progressive forces, while explicitly excluding individuals associated with the governments of Nicos Anastasiades or Nicos Christodoulides. While diplomat Andreas Mavroyiannis has publicly signaled his interest, causing some internal friction, he is considered a candidate for the party's shortlist. The leadership is currently weighing three strategic paths: selecting a partisan candidate, seeking an external figure, or pursuing a coalition, particularly with DIKO, to ensure a viable path to victory.
