Political developments in Cyprus as parties prepare for 2028 presidential elections
The political landscape in Cyprus is shifting as major parties begin preparations for the 2028 presidential elections. The Democratic Rally (DISY) has officially launched its internal process, setting October 26 for candidate nominations and November 28 for an extraordinary electoral assembly. Notably, party president Annita Demetriou has withdrawn her potential candidacy to foster party unity, leaving Averof Neofytou and Giorgos Pamporidis as the confirmed contenders. The party leadership has formally called for a civil internal dialogue, prioritizing unity and the rejection of personal confrontations.
Meanwhile, the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) is initiating its own procedures, with plans to finalize a candidate by March 2027 through an extraordinary nationwide conference. While the party has not yet settled on a candidate, it is considering both internal and external options, including potential figures from across the political spectrum. AKEL has prioritized finding a candidate who aligns with its vision for the Cyprus problem and avoids figures associated with the administrations of Nicos Anastasiades or Nikos Christodoulides. As these developments unfold, analysts note that the electorate remains largely uncommitted, with party leaders urging members to remain focused on political platforms rather than personal speculation.
