Cyprus issues orange weather warning for severe storms
The Cyprus Department of Meteorology has issued an updated orange weather warning effective from 15:00 on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, until 05:00 on Thursday, October 15. The alert was moved forward by four hours from its original 19:00 start time. The system, caused by a barometric low originating from the Ionian Sea, is expected to bring heavy rainfall ranging between 55 and 70 millimeters per hour, strong gusts of wind, and potential hail. The districts of Paphos, Limassol, and Larnaca are anticipated to be the most affected areas, though the entire island will experience some level of rainfall.
In response, the Civil Defence has released comprehensive safety recommendations to minimize risks to life and property. Citizens are advised to ensure drains and gutters are clear, secure loose outdoor objects such as water tanks, and move valuables from basements in flood-prone areas. Authorities have stated that the situation is being closely monitored, with the possible activation of the CY Alert system to provide real-time warnings to residents. Meteorological officer Andreas Chrysanthou emphasized that while phenomena will be intense, they will be isolated, and the severity may decrease as the storm moves toward the interior of the island.
