Christodoulides and Erhurman meet in UN buffer zone to discuss Cyprus talks
President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman held a meeting under UN auspices in the Nicosia buffer zone on October 13, 2026. The discussion covered methodology, the substance of the Cyprus problem, and confidence-building measures. Christodoulides brought 19 previously submitted proposals to the table; while some received positive feedback, others were met with rejection or requests for further study. The leaders also addressed the upcoming conclusion of Antonio Guterres' term as UN Secretary-General, agreeing that the solution must remain aligned with UN Security Council resolutions.
The leaders committed to continuing their dialogue next week and expressed anticipation for the visit of Maria Angela Holguin, the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy. In a move to sustain communication, they agreed to jointly attend a bicommunal festival in Pyla on October 17, 2026. Additionally, they will participate together in upcoming meetings of the Technical Committees on Cultural Heritage and Youth, as well as the Civil Society Consultative Body. Despite lingering disagreements over specific issues like border crossings, both sides emphasized a positive atmosphere and a willingness to negotiate toward the shared goal of restarting formal talks.
