President Christodoulides holds key talks with Turkish Cypriot leader Erhurman
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman met at the United Nations offices at the old Nicosia airport on October 13, 2026, to discuss the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus problem. President Christodoulides entered the talks with a specific 19-point proposal aimed at breaking the stalemate and addressing methodology and confidence-building measures. The UN has reportedly finalized a convergence document to serve as a foundation for these efforts, which the President hopes will pave the way for an expanded conference.
Simultaneously, the Republic of Cyprus confirmed its successful invitation to the COP31 UN Climate Change Conference in Antalya, Turkey, following intense diplomatic pressure on Ankara to ensure equal participation of all EU member states. This development was hailed as a diplomatic victory against Turkish attempts to isolate the Republic. During his recent appearances, including an anti-occupation event, President Christodoulides reaffirmed his commitment to a functional and sustainable solution, emphasizing that the return of Morphou remains a non-negotiable prerequisite for any settlement. While the government remains cautious about Turkey's ongoing push for a two-state solution, officials continue to prioritize dialogue and political will as the primary drivers for progress.
