Cyprus launches specialized organized crime unit
The newly established Department for Combating Organized Crime (DAOE), often referred to by the public as the 'Cypriot FBI', officially begins its operations in Cyprus on October 12, 2026. Led by Christos Andreou, the department aims to dismantle criminal networks through a structured approach, marking a significant reform within the national police force.
The agency is organized into four distinct sub-directorates with specialized mandates. The YPEE handles the collection and analysis of intelligence on serious crime, while the YKAN focuses on combating drug trafficking and reducing both supply and demand for illicit substances. The YDORE is responsible for investigating and solving serious and organized crime cases across the Republic of Cyprus, and the YSADES conducts strategic threat assessments to develop national counter-crime policies.
While the establishment of the unit initially faced skepticism and public debate regarding its efficacy, the department has now completed its staffing and operational planning. The focus of the new force extends beyond low-level gang members, with the stated objective of targeting high-ranking criminal leaders to effectively dismantle the hierarchy of organized crime rings.
