Drunk driver crashes into tavern in Thessaloniki, injuring three
A 45-year-old man was arrested in Thessaloniki early Sunday, October 11, after driving his vehicle into a tavern located on Agamemnonos Street in Evosmos. The incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. while the establishment was full of customers, resulting in injuries to three patrons and causing significant material damage to the premises.
Police reports and breathalyzer tests confirmed that the driver, who is of foreign nationality, was operating the vehicle while heavily intoxicated, with levels recorded at 0.77mg/l and 0.74mg/l, well above the legal limit of 0.25mg/l. Witnesses observed the driver attempting to flee the scene by reversing, but he was apprehended by patrons at the tavern until authorities arrived. Surveillance footage captured the moment the vehicle crashed into the outdoor seating area, where planters lining the perimeter of the shop acted as a barrier, likely preventing more severe casualties.
The owner of the establishment noted that without these defensive structures, the outcome could have been fatal. The suspect remains in custody and is expected to be brought before judicial authorities to face charges related to the accident.
