Cyprus plans expansion of Evangelos Florakis naval base
The Cyprus Ministry of Defence has commissioned a consortium of two Greek engineering firms, TRITON and MARNET, to conduct a one-year study on the expansion of the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base located in Mari. This initiative aims to establish the facility as a strategic military and operational support hub in the Eastern Mediterranean.
According to Captain Nikolaos Loukas of the Cyprus Navy, as reported by Janes, the primary objective of the expansion is to develop sufficient berthing capacity to host more than eight large-displacement warships and auxiliary vessels from allied nations. The project will focus exclusively on maritime and port infrastructure, with current plans indicating that there will be no expansion of the base's land footprint. The forthcoming study will define the specific technical requirements, the final number of berths, and the dimensions of vessels that can be accommodated.
The base currently operates with limited capacity, primarily serving the coastal patrol vessels of the Cyprus Navy. As the project is currently in the design and planning phase, official construction timelines and final technical specifications remain to be determined upon the completion of the year-long assessment.
