Turkey accelerates nationwide shelter construction program
The Turkish government has ordered an immediate acceleration in the construction and organization of civil defense shelters across all 81 provinces of the country. This initiative, which was originally launched last year, is now being fast-tracked due to rapidly evolving regional geopolitical conditions and the increasing necessity to prepare for potential military conflicts, crises, or natural disasters.
The project is spearheaded by the Housing Development Administration (TOKİ) and is based on strategic decisions made by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the National Security Council. As part of this effort, authorities have implemented a new regulatory framework regarding shelter standards, which introduces stricter requirements and mandates for these facilities, enhancing the nation's civil defense infrastructure.
The government intends to ensure that all regions are adequately prepared for emergencies through these upgraded protective measures. While the infrastructure project is part of a broader civil defense strategy, the recent legislative updates signal a shift toward mandatory compliance with higher safety standards to improve national resilience against diverse threats.
