Increase in underage driving incidents reported in Paphos
Police in the Paphos region, including the town of Polis Chrysochous, have reported a surge in incidents involving underage individuals driving vehicles without adult supervision. According to Michalis Nikolaou, Assistant Police Director of Paphos, seven cases were identified within the last seven to ten days. In all instances, the minors were caught operating their parents' vehicles while commuting to their respective schools.
Upon investigation, the parents involved consistently claimed that the minors had taken the vehicles without their permission or consent. Authorities are currently managing these incidents as juvenile cases, which involves taking formal statements from the parties involved. Official reports indicate that there is currently no intention to prosecute the minors themselves for these actions.
To address this growing trend, the police have announced that they will launch coordinated operations in the coming days to prevent further instances of underage driving. These initiatives aim to increase vigilance and enforcement near school units to discourage adolescents from accessing parental vehicles.
