Omonia travels to Slovenia to face Celje in Europa League match

Omonia Nicosia has arrived in Slovenia for its second-round match of the UEFA Europa League against NK Celje, scheduled for October 15, 2026, at 19:45 at Stadion Z'dezele. This encounter marks the first time in history that Omonia will face a Slovenian opponent in European competition. The team, coached by Henning Berg, enters the match with positive momentum following a 1-0 victory against Celta Vigo in the tournament's opening round.

The squad traveling to Slovenia includes key players such as Kaminski, Fabiano, and Jure Balkovec. Balkovec, who is returning to his home country, emphasized the emotional significance of the game and noted that he has faced Celje 18 times throughout his career. Omonia’s spokesperson, Andreas Demetriou, stated that the team is focused on securing a positive result to improve their standing in the League Phase, noting that the opponent is experienced and difficult at home. Andreas Christou is unavailable due to injury, while other players remain sidelined due to European squad registration rules.

NK Celje, the reigning Slovenian champions, are currently backed by Russian investor Maxim Demin and have seen significant growth in recent years. Omonia plans to depart for Cyprus shortly after the match, with approximately 500 supporters expected to attend the game in person to cheer for the team.
