Hearings continue in Tempi train disaster trial
The trial regarding the February 28, 2023, train collision in Tempi, which resulted in the deaths of 57 people, continues at the Three-Member Criminal Court of Appeal in Larissa. During the 39th and 40th sessions, the court heard emotional testimonies from families of the victims, including parents of the 23-year-old Cypriot student Kyprianos Papaioannou. His father, priest Christodoulos Papaioannou, testified about the conditions of his son's remains, raising questions regarding strange burns and a chemical odor, and criticized the decision to restrict access to viewing the body. Other witnesses, including the mother of Gerasimos Georgiadis, the sole survivor of the first carriage, shared the ongoing medical struggles and psychological trauma caused by the disaster.
Defendants Pavlos Kouzis and Spyridon Pateras remain the primary subjects of the ongoing legal proceedings. Survivors also provided accounts of the impact, detailing the struggle to escape the burning wreckage and the persistent psychological scars. The judicial process, which includes testimony from 25 scheduled witnesses this week, remains focused on determining responsibility for the crash. The court proceedings are expected to continue as survivors and families of victims provide further evidence, with many relatives emphasizing their continued pursuit of accountability despite their grief.
