Irene Charalambidou addresses 2023 presidential campaign controversy
During an appearance on the Sigma television program 'Protoselido' on October 12, 2026, ALMA Movement MP Irene Charalambidou revisited the political background surrounding the 2023 presidential elections. She focused on the alleged discussions regarding a potential candidacy of George Pamporidis supported by AKEL and DIKO. Charalambidou, who was an AKEL member at the time, highlighted the significant political costs she incurred after publicly opposing these maneuvers.
Charalambidou demanded that AKEL leadership clarify whether the party had vetted Pamporidis, arguing that conflicting accounts regarding the discussions cannot both be true. She further alleged that the party leadership circulated an internal circular to grassroots party groups aimed at undermining her position, a claim the party has officially denied. Charalambidou insisted that she personally witnessed the document when it was shown to her by two fellow MPs.
Beyond the past electoral disputes, Charalambidou dismissed any personal interest in running for the presidency of the Republic. She also addressed current legislative efforts, specifically noting a bill she has introduced to enhance transparency regarding the ownership structures of media organizations in Cyprus.
