Cyprus government employment figures for September 2026
In September 2026, the total number of government employees in Cyprus reached 53,152, representing an annual increase of 1.2% or 622 people compared to September 2025, according to the Statistical Service.
The distribution of personnel varied across sectors: the Public Service saw a 1.2% decrease, totaling 22,812 employees. Conversely, the Educational Service experienced a 4.0% increase to 16,485 staff, and the Security Forces saw a 2.0% rise, reaching 13,855 personnel. Regarding employment types, permanent staff increased by 3.2% to 33,893, while fixed-term employees (EOX) saw the largest decline, dropping by 9.1% to 3,161 individuals. A notable specific trend was observed within the Security Forces, where the number of fixed-term employees plummeted by 97.7%, falling from 87 to just two people.
These figures follow general trends in the state workforce, where the shift toward permanent roles has been significant. The Statistical Service attributes the dramatic reduction of fixed-term staff in the Security Forces to specific departmental policy changes, though the full context of these structural shifts remains a subject of ongoing administrative analysis.
