Hellas Sat celebrates 25 years of space presence and announces new satellite project
During World Space Week in October 2026, Hellas Sat marked its 25th anniversary of operation. Christodoulos Protopapas, who has served as President and CEO throughout this period, reflected on the company's evolution from an initial effort labeled as "madness" in the late 1990s and early 2000s into a critical national and geopolitical asset for Greece and Europe. The company’s establishment was essential to securing vital orbital slots that were at risk of being permanently lost.
Protopapas highlighted that the strategic importance of satellite infrastructure has grown significantly over the last two decades. While the early 2000s lacked the current geopolitical pressures, such as the war in Ukraine, which demonstrate the necessity of space capabilities for sovereignty, the current climate requires autonomous and enhanced European space infrastructure. In light of this, the company is now moving forward with plans for the development of its new satellite, Hellas Sat 5, to further strengthen its technological footprint.
