Cyprus reports significant reduction in child poverty rates
A study examining the implementation of the European Child Guarantee across European Union member states reveals a significant decline in child poverty and social exclusion in Cyprus. According to data published in October 2026, the percentage of children at risk of poverty in Cyprus fell to 14.0% in 2025, down from 22.1% in 2019. This decrease represents one of the most substantial improvements recorded within the EU during this period.
With this achievement, Cyprus now ranks as the member state with the third-lowest rate of child poverty in the union, trailing only Slovenia at 12.5% and the Netherlands at 12.7%. The report, titled 'Strengthening the European Child Guarantee – Overview of lessons and best practices from EU member states,' was prepared by the European Parliament's Policy Department and Eurofound at the request of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs. The study analyzed various social indicators, including preschool education, school dropout rates, and unmet healthcare needs, noting that Cyprus has transitioned from a mid-tier performer to one of the top-performing nations regarding child welfare outcomes.
