Cyprus House President expresses disappointment over lack of progress in Cyprus talks
On Monday, October 12, 2026, the President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus, Annita Demetriou, met with a delegation of international officials visiting the country for the 'Morphou Days of Remembrance' events. During the discussions, Demetriou expressed her clear disappointment regarding the prolonged lack of progress toward resolving the Cyprus issue.
The visiting delegation included the Third Vice-President of the Hellenic Parliament Athanasios Bouras, alongside Greek MPs Georgios Karasmanis, Michalis Katrinis, and Rena Dourou. Also participating were UK Member of Parliament Pambos Charalambous, Slovenian MP Dusan Stojanovic, and various local government officials from Greece, France, and the UK. The group was accompanied by the Mayor of Morphou, Viktoras Hadjiavraam, and members of his municipal council.
Demetriou emphasized that Greece remains the staunchest supporter of Cyprus in its efforts to reach a settlement. She highlighted the critical necessity of building upon the negotiated convergences established during past diplomatic efforts, specifically referring to those achieved up to and including the Crans-Montana talks in 2017. The meeting underscored the ongoing diplomatic attempts to keep the Cyprus issue on the international agenda through the engagement of foreign representatives and local government figures.
