Cyprus transport minister outlines strategy to combat traffic congestion
On Monday, October 12, 2026, the Cypriot Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Evi Tsolaki, announced a new initiative to address severe traffic congestion, particularly in the Limassol region. Speaking at a roundtable discussion marking the start of 'Green Week 2026', Tsolaki identified public transportation as the primary solution to the island's chronic traffic issues.
To encourage higher public transport ridership, the ministry is launching an information campaign aimed at persuading citizens to choose buses over private vehicles. Tsolaki emphasized that this strategy requires a holistic approach, involving cooperation between central government ministries, local authorities, bus companies, and private sector stakeholders. The event was organized by the Cypronetwork group in collaboration with the Green Energy Group, the District Organization of Local Government of Limassol, and the municipalities of Limassol, Amathounta, Polemidia, and Kouri.
The minister acknowledged that the traffic problem, which she described as unbearable, cannot be solved overnight. Beyond the awareness campaign, the plan includes necessary upgrades to the existing public transport infrastructure to ensure it becomes a viable alternative for daily commuters. The initiative seeks to bring all relevant stakeholders to the table to implement a coordinated and long-term resolution to the urban mobility crisis.
