Photographer Bora Markovic to receive Cypriot citizenship after 30-year wait
Cypriot authorities have confirmed that photographer and content creator Bora Markovic will be granted Cypriot citizenship, resolving a case that spanned over 30 years. Markovic, who arrived in Cyprus from Serbia as a ten-year-old child in the 1990s, has become widely known for his social media content showcasing the natural beauty of the island. The decision follows intervention from AKEL Member of Parliament Christos Christofides, who highlighted the case to Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou earlier this year.
The long-standing legal obstacles regarding Markovic’s status were primarily attributed to a bureaucratic gap in his residency records dating back to when he was a minor. Previously, the Interior Ministry had noted in a July 2026 response that a formal application submitted in November 2019 had been rejected in May 2023, leaving no pending files for immediate processing. However, following humanitarian considerations, the ministry has now moved to rectify the situation.
Markovic, who integrates into local society and promotes the island’s landscape internationally, has been praised for his patience and contributions to the public understanding of Cyprus. While no official date for the passport issuance has been set, the ministry’s confirmation indicates that the administrative barriers have finally been overcome.
