Athletes protest closure of Paphos municipal swimming pool
On Monday evening, athletes, coaches, and parents from the Evagoras Pallikarides Water Polo team held a protest outside the Paphos Municipal Hall. The demonstrators demanded immediate action regarding the municipal swimming pool, which has been non-operational for approximately four to five weeks. This closure has disrupted training schedules for various organizations, including the Paphos Nautical Club, the AGO program, and the local sports school, forcing many athletes to travel outside the district to prepare for upcoming championships.
During the meeting, Nikolas Nikolaou, president of the water polo department, received assurances from the Acting Mayor of Paphos, Angelos Onisiforou, that a formal meeting is scheduled for Wednesday. This session will involve the Paphos Municipality and Giannos Ioannou, President of the Cyprus Sports Organization (KOA), to discuss a definitive solution for the facility's reopening.
In the interim, the Paphos Nautical Club has publicly expressed gratitude to the KOA and municipal authorities for facilitating the use of the 50-meter swimming pool in Coral Bay. This temporary arrangement allows athletes to continue their training routines while officials work toward the full restoration of the 25-meter municipal facility.
